Use Extra Caution Driving in Fog

Be a safer driver when fog reduces your visibility.

Driving in fog can be treacherous. Not only is visibility reduced, the accompanying moisture can build up on road surfaces creating slippery conditions. It doesn’t matter how experienced you are or what kind of car you’re driving, you need to be extra cautious driving in fog.

If you encounter fog while driving, here are some safe-driving tips.

  • Turn your lights to low beam so other drivers see you. Don’t use high beams, which reflect light back at you and further reduce visibility.
  • Slow down so you can stop in the space you can see in front of your vehicle.
  • Maintain a greater distance between you and the car in front of you.
  • Use your wipers and defrosters to keep your windshield and windows clear of moisture.
  • Use the painted lines on the right edge of the road as a guide. (Using the center line could bring you dangerously close to oncoming traffic.)
  • Roll your window down a little to listen for traffic.
  • If you need to stop for any reason, pull as far off the road as possible. Turn your lights off and take your foot off the brakes. (Cars behind may follow your lights and end up off the road as well.)
  • Remember that other drivers have a limited sight distance. Signal any turns or stops earlier than usual so they know your plans.

The keys to driving in fog are to slow down, allow extra time and make your vehicle as visible as possible.
